5 Reasons to Admire the Northern Lights in Northern Norway
Have you ever dreamed of watching the sky transform into a dazzling show of dancing lights? Seeing the Northern Lights with your own eyes is a one-of-a-kind travel experience, and Northern Norway offers many reasons to be your starting point. Here are just a few:
1. The chances are really high
It’s not guaranteed, but generally, you can see the Northern Lights in Norway from early September to the end of March, with peak viewing hours between 11 PM and 2 AM and outside of the full moon phase. According to Visit Norway, the months of March, September, and October are historically the most favorable.
2. You can see the Northern Lights during the day
It may sound crazy, but did you know it’s possible to enjoy the famous light show even around lunchtime? Thanks to a phenomenon called the polar night, when the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon, the sky remains dark even during “daytime.” In some towns in Northern Norway, this occurs from mid-November to the end of January.
3. It’s one of the most stunning places in the world for this adventure
The natural beauty of Northern Norway makes witnessing the Northern Lights even more special. How about watching the spectacle from a fjord in Tromsø, the coast of Alta, between the peaks of the Lofoten Islands, or amid glaciers in the Svalbard archipelago?

4. Save money during the low season
On a tighter budget? Traveling to Northern Norway in the low season might be the perfect solution! Late August, early September, and April (except during Easter) are excellent times to catch the nighttime show at a lower cost.
5. So much more than just the Northern Lights
While it’s never possible to guarantee sightings of natural phenomena, rest assured there are plenty of activities to fill your heart with joy and create unforgettable memories. Snowshoeing, staying in an ice hotel, relaxing in a warm sauna, wildlife photography, snowmobile adventures—these are just a few of the options.
Northern Norway is waiting for you, and Northern Norway Travel is ready to be your partner on this adventure. Don’t wait! Statistics show that 2025 and 2026 will be peak years for Northern Lights activity—so now is the perfect time to plan your trip!
